The Old Harbour serves as the historic heart of Hermanus, attracting visitors daily who come to admire its charm and capture photos of the bay, whales and surrounding mountains. Even locals often frequent the waterfront to simply appreciate its beauty.
Friends of the Old Harbour Museum therefore encourages residents to join them in raising funds for improvements and renovations, particularly the restoration of the iconic old wooden boats that have weathered over time.
Membership for R100 a year offers free entry to museums in Hermanus, making it a valuable perk while contributing to a worthy cause.
The initiative goes beyond membership fees. The exciting new coffee table book ‘Hermanus – A Photographic History of 1855-1955’, compiled and recently launched by long-time residents of Hermanus, Michael Clark, Dinkie Marais and Jack van Dyk, will be reprinted and the profits from those sales will also be used. This beautiful book is a treasure trove of local history, offering a captivating glimpse into Hermanus’ past.
Overstrand Executive Mayor, Dr Annelie Rabie, emphasises the importance of community involvement. “The Old Harbour Museum isn’t just for tourists; it’s a cherished landmark for residents too. We commend the ‘Friends’ for their dedication to preserving this local icon.”
